Pygora Goat Herd

In memory of Sandro, our first breeding buck. Sandro was killed by a cougar April 17, 2006 while defending the other goats in his pen.

Pygora goats are a breed that originated in Oregon as a cross between Angoras and Pygmies (Pygora is a contraction of Pygmy-Angora). Pygora fleeces are defined in three fleece types but individual animals show great variety. They don't always fit exactly to one of the three fleece types. The three fleece types are:

  1. A fleece - this is an Angora-like fleece characterized by long, tightly wound ringlets of fleece. These fleeces are shorn once or twice a year;
  2. B fleece - a less tightly wound but often bushier fleece. B-fleece animals are often mistaken for sheep. B-fleece animals are shorn once a year;
  3. C fleece - a fine fiber that is combed out instead of being shorn. This fleece can be catagorized as cashmere due to its fineness, but the quantity produced is significantly less than that produced by A- and B-fleece animals.

Pygora goats are covered by two registries:

  • The Pygora Breeders Association (PBA) is the original registry and only registers Pygoras that have only pure white Angoras in their ancestry.
  • the Pygora Colored Association (PCA) is a broader registry that allows the Angora-Pygmy cross goats whose ancestry includes colored Angoras. (Under the registry rules, a Pygora can be registered either with PBA or PCA, depending on heritage, but no goat could qualify for both registries.)
Jo's Fleece Fields maintains farm membership in both registries and has both PBA and PCA animals.

PBA animals are customarily named with the farm identifier followed by names whose first letter indicates the year of birth (not all letters are used). 2003 was an S year, 2004 was a T year, 2005 was a V year, 2006 was a W year, 2007 was the X year, and 2008 is a Y year. See our 2008 kids and their parents. Jo's Fleece Fields follows this custom, but we don't rename animals that were purchased from farms that don't follow the custom. Jo's Fleece Fields farm identifier is JFF.

Jo's Fleece Fields Pygora Goat herd consists of 6 breeding does, one non-breeding doe, 2 bucks, and presently 3 wethers and a juvenile doeling. Our new kids, the doeling, and the wethers are available for sale. Contact us for terms.
